OThe first test in Colombo came to a draw. However, the draw wasn't one of equal work, but was the result of a resolute fight back from the Pakistani squad, from the brink of defeat.
Pakistan, iniitally on top after dismissing Sri Lanka for 185, were in trouble after they were dismissed for 176, and were unable to restrict Sri Lanka who were able to reach 448 for 5. At the beginning of the fifth day, Pakistan were at 89 for 2, with Shoaib Malik and Faisal Iqbal at the crease, and with only Inzamam to come from the recognized batsmen, things may have looked bleak.
Shoaib and Faisal put all of that to the rest, with a 115 run stand for the 3rd wicket, that lasted well into the 2nd session, and after Inzamam scored 48, the match's draw was no where in doubt. While many have questioned Shoaib's ability to open in the last few tests, this site came to his defence earlier as one of the opening pairs, and after his performance here, his versatility and extraordinary talent must be recognized.
And if one checks here, Shoaib Malik's performance as an opener has been reasonable. He had scored 278 runs in 10 innings at a reasonable average of 27.8. Those aren't opening batsman numbers, but its a start for a 24 year old. With his performance in this test, he has lifted that average to 42.60, which most would contend is quite reasonable. What is more important though, is his fighting spirit and resolve, which cannot be taught.
All the power to our boys, and to Shoaib Malik!
