Woolmer spiking a pitch?!

Not sure what this is about, but there seems to be a lot of hoopla about Woolmer inserting a spike into the edge of the pitch? Perhaps it was to judge its firmness or moisture. Im not clear about the ICC regulations, but this doesn't really seem that harmful? Only time will tell.
